What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins can be described as organic compounds found in food. Vitamins are necessary for us to absorb nutrients in the foods we consume. Vitamins cannot come from the body so food must provide them.

There are two types: water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Water soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water. You can find vitamin C,B1 or thiamine, B2 or riboflavin and B3 or niacin, B3/niacin, B6/pyridoxine, folic Acid, biotin and pantothenic Acid as examples. Fat-soluble vitamins can be stored in the liver or in fatty tissue. Vitamin D, E, K and A are some examples.

Vitamins are classified according their biological activity. There are eight major vitamin groups:

  • A - essential for normal growth and maintenance of health.
  • C - essential for nerve function and energy generation.
  • D - necessary for healthy bones and teeth.
  • E is necessary for good vision, reproduction.
  • K - Required for healthy nerves and muscles.
  • P - Essential for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - aids digestion, absorption and absorption iron
  • R - necessary for making red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamins varies depending on age, gender, and physical condition. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sets RDA values.

2000 micrograms daily is required for adults over 50 to maintain their general health. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding need 3000 micrograms per day due to increased nutrient requirements.

Adults over 70 need 1500 micrograms daily, as they lose 10% of their muscle every ten years.

Women who have been pregnant or are lactating require more than the RDA. Pregnant women need 4000 micrograms per dayduring pregnancy and 2500 micrograms per day after delivery. Breastfeeding mothers need to consume 5000 micrograms every day when breastmilk has been produced.
